While our Cream Shiba Inus are known for their beautiful double coats, our puppies, like my adorable Émi, still need a little extra TLC to stay warm and comfortable during the colder months. As a Cream Shiba Inu puppy owner experiencing my first winter with Émi, I’ve been learning firsthand about the essential winter care tips to keep her happy and healthy. Paw Balm is Your Best Friend
Paw balm is a game-changer for winter paw care! It acts as a barrier, protecting your Shiba Inu puppy’s paw pads from the drying effects of cold air, ice, and those harsh de-icing salts used on sidewalks. I apply a dog-specific, natural paw balm to Émi’s paws before we head out for our winter walks. I focus on the pads and in-between her toes. Look for balms made with ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, or coconut oil. While petroleum jelly (Vaseline) is generally safe for dogs in small amounts, dog-specific paw balms are often a better choice, offering deeper moisturization and being designed with ingredients that are safer if licked [1]. To make it a positive experience, I usually give Émi a little treat while I apply it, so she associates paw balm time with something good!
